Backyard Poultry Promotion for Rural Livelihood Development in Uttar Pradesh

The state of Uttar Pradesh has enormous potential and conducive environment for poultry development yet only Backyard poultry is developing steadily in the region. Despite rich resources like availability of maize grain, other poultry feed ingredients, plenty of manpower, huge market, steep rise in poultry product consumption, development of entrepreneurship in poultry sector has not taken required pace in the state.

As per the Uttar Pradesh Poultry Development Project-2013 reports, there is a huge gap in the requirement and availability of poultry in the state. The Indian Nutritional Academy, Hyderabad has suggested consumption of 182 eggs per head per annum as standard. The National availability is 53 eggs while in U.P. it is 22 eggs. Similarly, the standard suggested for chicken mean consumption is 11.00 kg, the national availability is 2.2 kg and in U.P. it is 0.987 kg per head per annum.

Leveraging this opportunity, the Nudge Foundation’s ‘Asha Kiran’ project partnered with the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission (UPSRLM) to strengthen the poultry intervention in Uttar Pradesh. As a technical partner in the project, ASSET&W committed resources to empower communities, by providing technical assistance on Improved Backyard Poultry Management practices and supported building strong Social Capital through Heifer International’s proven model of ‘12 Cornerstones for just and sustainable development and promoted the backyard poultry hatchery enterprises.
